Get Beautiful, even skin tone
Foundation tips and tricks
- Always test your foundation color in natural daylight where possible.
- Test foundation on your jawline not on the back of your hands. Your hands are usually a little darker than your face.
- Do not get pressured into buying a color or foundation type just because the sales assistant said it suited you. Test run it out in natural light and if you can’t, make sure YOU are happy with it as a match or with its texture.
- Where possible get the best match for your skin tone. This means that the color when applied on your skin melts into your skin and you cannot tell where your skin ends and where the foundation begins. Foundation is not meant to cover or conceal. It is a means to evening out the color tone of your face. A good foundation with good coverage will never look thick, but will look natural on your skin.
- Never get a foundation color that is lighter than your skin tone, hoping to make yourself look fairer than you actually are. A color that is too light will cause your skin to look ashy and grey. Not a pleasant sight.
- If you want to look a little tanned, get a foundation shade that’s a little darker than your skin tone. Make sure that you apply it on your neck as well or you will end up looking very strange.
- If you bought a liquid foundation color in summer when tanned and find that its too dark for you in winter, try mixing in some moisturizer or sunscreen to lighten it. You need sunscreen in winter too.
- If you have a powder foundation that is a little dark for you, apply it with a large powder brush or kabuki brush. It will cause the powder to go on more sheer and you don’t have to toss your foundation.

Lemonade Cucumber Spa Pops
Lemonade Cucumber Spa Popsicles
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 3 hours
Total Time: 3 hours, 5 minutes
Yield: 3 cups of mix (6 1/2 cup pops)
Ingredients
- 1 cup julienned seedless Cucumber
- 1 fresh squeezed Lemon, remove any seeds
- 2 cups cold Water
- Natural Sweetener added to taste: use your favorite, I use Stevia. Maple Syrup, Honey & Agave are good too
- Slice lemon in half and squeeze it over a strainer into 2 cups of cold water. Sweeten lemon water to taste with your favorite sweetener. Fill popsicle molds 2/3 with lemonade. Freeze uncovered for about 1 hour. Take pops out of freezer. Scrape and stir any ice crystals that have formed. Add a spoonful of the julienned cucumber to the pop molds. Be sure to leave a tiny bit of room at the top of your popsicle mold so they don't overflow when you add the stick. With a popsicle stick or a butter knife, press the cucumber into the mixture so it is evenly distributed. Add your popsicle sticks, freeze pops for another 3-4 hours until solid.
- These spa pops are a healthier & more cost efficient alternative to store bought pops. More environmentally friendly too, no packaging to toss!
- As always, use your own taste buds to determine how sweet you want your ice pops.
- Instead of lemon, try some lime!

Superfood Wrap
Wraps are always a good way to mix things up when you’re just not feeling like a sandwich. This nutrient-rich and fiber-packed recipe from Immersion Spa at The Water Club at Borgata will leave you feeling satisfied but not overly stuffed – perfect for picnics on hot summer days, or if you’re simply in a rush and need something healthy that you can grab and go.
Quinoa, a South American whole grain that has gotten plenty of attention for its healthful benefits, is high in complete protein, which means that it includes all nine essential amino acids. With well-balanced amino acids, quinoa can be a great protein choice for vegans or for those in search of alternative adequate protein sources. And, not only does this grain promote cardiovascular health through its magnesium content, it can also help with tissue growth and repair, which is always helpful in maintaining beautiful and healthy skin.
Filled with other healthful ingredients such as in-season Heirloom tomatoes, baby arugula and delicious avocado, this recipe is a must-try!
Superfood Wrap (Serves 4)
4 large organic whole wheat wraps
½ cup cooked quinoa
¼ cup organic yogurt
Juice of 2 organic lemons
2 tbsp organic olive oil
¼ cup seedless, unpasteurized green olives
1 large Heirloom tomato, thickly sliced
1 avocado, thickly sliced
Sea salt and cracked pepper
Baby arugula leaves, cleaned and picked
- Mix together the quinoa, yogurt, lemon, olive oil, salt and pepper in a bowl.
- Lay the wraps out on a table and the divide evenly the rest of the ingredients onto the wrap.
- Divide evenly the quinoa mixture atop the fresh produce ingredients.
- Wrap, burrito style, and cut wraps at an angle evenly into three pieces.

Flattering Hairstyles to Compliment your Face Shape
Find out how to choose to best
hairstyle for your face shape from the hair experts at Sanctuary Salon and Day Spa.
A great haircut compliments your lifestyle, and flatters your face shape and
stature. Not sure what face shape you are? Our stylists at Sanctuary Salon and
Day Spa are trained to incorporate face shape to determine the best hairstyle
for each individual. We listen to your needs and assess your physical
characteristics to create a look that is both easy to care for and contemporary
in style.
ROUND FACE: Looks good with a mixture of layers and texture. Keeping
the length below the chin and adding a side swept bang will make a round face
look slimmer.
LONG FACE: Long straight hair is not ideal for a long face shape because
it drags the face down. However, you can soften this long shape by adding waves
or curls. Consider a long bob at shoulder length to flatter a long face.
SQUARE FACE: Strong angular jawlines are traits of a square face. Texture
and curls will soften a square jawline. Square faces should avoid chin length
bobs and blunt heavy bangs as they will accentuate a strong jawline.
OVAL FACE: An oval face shape is the most versatile of them all. Jessica
Alba and Beyonce share an oval shape. Long layers, short choppy bobs, and
pixies are all great haircuts for this face shape. Straight or curly hair in
varying lengths work well with an oval face.
HEART SHAPE: Reese
Witherspoon first comes to mind when I think of a heart shaped face. She always
has gorgeous hairstyles that compliment her heart shape face. Long side swept bangs and soft waves below the
chin will add width to the bottom of a heart shaped face.

Home Hair Color Disasters
Coloring your own hair may sound simple enough; you buy a $10 box of hair color at the pharmacy and one hour later you look like you’re in a commercial, right? Wrong. Unfortunately, for those who have tried coloring their own hair, many will admit that it’s much harder than it looks. Here are just five reasons why you shouldn’t color your own hair:
- Results – Boxed hair colors don't have the same richness in color as salon products. Boxed hair colors also offer a limited assortment of colors and shades, whereas a professional can match your hair color to the exact color and shade. Even worse, if your technique is off, you could wind up with blotchy hair or dark tips. Since different kinds of hair require different techniques you can also kiss those store bought highlights goodbye because all of the special brushes, combs or caps never work as advertised and lightening your hair is nearly impossible without leaving a brassy, orange tint to your hair.
- Your Hair – Why would you risk irreparable damage to your hair just to save a couple bucks? That’s right, store bought hair colors can often times ruin your hair, or damage it for months. Some hair colors don’t mix well, and some are made for specific kinds of hair. You can also have chemical overload, so if you’ve done a chemical straightener or perm recently, adding harsh chemicals can literally make your hair fall out!
- It’s a Mess! – Store bought hair colors can dye your clothes, towels, skin and even walls and floors! Boxed hair color can be a real mess, and unless you have a friend helping you out, you’re bound to get a few spots here and there.
- You could hurt yourself – Hair color is no joke, I mean you're playing with science. Some hair colors are so strong they aren’t even approved for use in the United States, but you can still manage to find them (sometimes accidentally) on beauty store shelves. Certain bleaches and chemicals can actually burn your scalp, which is not only painful and unattractive, but it can kill your roots as well.
- Money – Yes, doing your hair color at home can save you some money, but if you do anything wrong, a corrective color will end up costing you more time and money than having it professionally done in the first place. Not only will you be out extra cash, your hair may need more time to recover and you may have to go with an entirely different color while your hair gets back to a more healthy state.
